Fire lighting. Keep dry matches in the car, fire lighters are not 'the thing' but do get things going! (a few firelighters always help!) A hollow tube about a metre long when placed in the heart of a dull fire and blown into will generate a fast flame. This can be metal or plastic.
Collect wood and always store out of the rain. It might be sunny today but wet tomorrow. If the water supply is dubious, boil for at least 3 minutes
Try this with potatoes. dice to about 50mm cubes (3/8 inch) pour olive oil into wok or similar, add 1/2 onion, 2 or 3 cloves garlic, simmer together until soft about 10 minutes. Add salt to taste before serving. When filling a kettle or 'billly' from stream or tank, fill through the spout holding it below the surface to avoid any surface dust or twigs.
Mildew, kill and cure it with a solution of bicarbonate of soda! For Hikers, every time you stop for a break, take off your boots and socks, Give your feet a breather, they will stay dry longer and minimalise the risk of blisters.
A bucket with a lid, left in the porch of your tent (if you have a porch) is very handy at night if you need to 'go'! - saving that awful walk across miles of campsite in the dark. You can empty it in the loo in the morning!

For those who get thirsty at night, keep a bicycle water bottle handy - it won't leak if it falls over and you can't lose the lid.

If the ground is sloping, place your tent so that your head is at the top of the slope and your feet at the bottom. If you don't do this, you may either roll sideways in the night, or wake up with a headache!

When cooking pasta, to save fuel: boil water, put pasta in, bring back to boil then turn off heat. Put pan on ground, cover with teacloth and leave for about 15 minutes - pasta will cook by itself.

Always take plenty of clothes pegs and thick cord with you when you go camping. You will often have wet or damp clothes to hang up, and it is annoying to see them blow away in the wind..!

Buy a campbed with a raised head, like the excellent one we have just obtained from yourselves, and then you don't need to take a thick pillow with you!- a very small one is enough.
